The Forgotten Nutrient!

Recent studies have shown that the leading risk factor for diet-related ill health -

rather than being ultra-processed food, too much salt, sugar or fat - is, in fact, a lack

of fiber in our diets.

“Fiber feels like the forgotten nutrient,” says Dr Samantha Gill, a specialist

gastroenterology dietician for the British Dietetic Association. “It has a reputation for

being bland, boring and tasting like cardboard.”* And yet, it is one of the most

important elements in our diet!

What is Fiber?

Dietary fibers are defined as carbohydrate polymers consisting of ten or more

monomeric units that can move through the small intestine of humans without being

hydrolysed by the endogenous enzymes (CODEX Alimentarius Commission, 2009),

unlike other food factors that are primarily digested in this location. Dietary fiber

therefore ends up in the large bowel, where it is partially or fully broken down by gut

bacteria.

It is mainly sourced from grains, cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables and nuts and is

categorised based on three characteristics that impact its function:

Solubility (a measure of how well it is dissolved in water)

Viscosity (a measure of how thick or runny it is)

Fermentability (a measure of how fast and efficiently it is broken down by gut

bacteria)

Why is eating a fiber-rich diet so

important?

Despite being overshadowed by protein and not having received the attention of the

more attractive counterparts, fat and carbohydrates, dietary fiber is the most

essential macronutrient for long-term health. It is known to alleviate and/or

prevent constipation by regulating bowel movements. But fiber isn’t just about

digestive health; adequate fiber intake is associated with a decreased risk of common

chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and

colorectal cancer. It also acts as a prebiotic, nourishing the beneficial bacteria in our

gut maintaining a healthy and diverse gut microbiome, which in turn may positively

impact our immune system and our overall well-being, including brain health.

Healthy fiber consumption is linked to the following health benefits;

Fiber helps you feel fuller longer

Lowers chance of heart disease

Improves gut health and digestion

Reduces risk of certain cancers

Lowers risk of diabetes

Why does it matter to us at

Agrigum?

At Agrigum, we understand that the consumption of a balanced diet that includes a

variety of fiber-rich foods is the way forward, while we are particularly concerned

about the clear lack of dietary fiber in our modern-day eating habits.

AGRIGUMFIBER™!

We have recently introduced our AGRIGUMFIBER™, a plant-based ingredient

derived from acacia trees with prebiotic properties. It is a fiber-replete ingredient that

can be conveniently used in an array of food applications to enhance their nutritional

profile, in particular to boost their fiber content. AGRIGUMFIBER, being a non-

soluble dietary fiber, supports the maintenance of a healthy gut and, due to its origin,

it contributes to sustainable eating patterns.

We would love to discuss AGRIGUMFIBER with you and go deeper into the

wonderful world of Acacia Fibers! Please email us for more information. We look

forward to hearing from you.
